I Don’t Know What Type of TMA I Have

“TMA” describes a pattern of blood-vessel injury rather than one single disease. TTP, CM-TMA/aHUS, Shiga toxin-associated HUS, and TMAs associated with other medical conditions can overlap at presentation. Your medical team uses your history, laboratory testing, organ involvement, and response to treatment to determine the most likely cause.

Two important pathways

TTP and CM-TMA / aHUS need different evaluation and treatment approaches.

  • Would complement testing, genetic counseling, or genetic testing be useful?
  • What symptoms should prompt urgent evaluation?
  • Should I be evaluated at a center with TMA expertise?
